Supreme Court Video Reflection

Supreme Court Building
This is the U.S. Supreme Court Building.

Before watching the video, I knew the Supreme Court was important, but I did not realize just how much responsibility rests on nine justices' shoulders. The video showed how the Court handles some of the biggest questions in the country, from a prisoner's claim of innocence to questions about presidential power.

One of the first things that stood out to me was the number of cases the Court receives. Every year, thousands of petitions are submitted, and most are requests from people who believe a lower court made the wrong decision. Even though so many cases are reviewed, only a small number are actually accepted by the justices.

What surprised me most was how the justices work together.

Before watching the video, I imagined the Supreme Court as a very distant institution. Instead, the justices came across as surprisingly respectful and personable. I was shocked to learn that they deliberate in silence and that they shake hands before every meeting. Another detail I found interesting was that everyone gets a chance to speak once before anyone speaks a second time, ensuring that every justice has an opportunity to share their perspective.
The video also helped me better understand the Court's role in interpreting the Constitution. The justices are responsible for applying a document that is more than 200 years old to modern issues while continuing to protect freedoms and safeguard liberty. I had never really considered how challenging that responsibility must be.

I was also interested to learn that Americans have not always accepted the Court's authority in the way they do today. The video explained how the Court gradually earned respect as a coequal branch of government, with John Marshall playing a major role in that process. It also highlighted the importance of the 14th Amendment and how it, in a way, acts as a second Bill of Rights, which I had never thought about in quite the same way before.

My biggest takeaway is that the Supreme Court is more than just a court. The video described it as a model for other high courts around the world and one of the most influential and powerful judicial bodies on earth. Learning more about its history, traditions, and responsibilities gave me a greater appreciation for the role it plays in American government and in protecting individual freedoms.

AI Disclosure: AI was not used in the research and information for this blog post. All information came from notes I took while watching a video titled "Supreme Court of the United States." I then prompted Microsoft Copilot Pro to help shape my notes into a blog post of between 300 and 350 words written in a smooth professional style. I then added links to online sources that the reader could pursue for more information. Finally, I added appropriate images and captions to help break up the type and give the post a more professional look.
